Copyrights and Amazon’s eBook Recall

Posted by David Boultbee On July - 20 - 2009

Amazon sparked an outcry in the blogosphere late last week when it deleted two books from people’s Kindles. Ironically the eBooks in question were George Orwell’s “1984″ and “Animal Farm”, prompting headlines like

Some E-Books Are More Equal Than Others

Amazon recalled the ebooks because the publisher lacked the rights. As an author, I can appreciate the steps that Amazon took to remedy the problem even if I don’t agree with their methods. No doubt about it, Amazon made a mistake, not in what they did, but in how they went about it. Working for a public relations firm, I’ve gained new appreciation for the value of proper communications, something that Amazon would do well to heed. It also raises disturbing issues regarding ownership and censorship. If Amazon can delete the books in question, there is nothing to say that they can’t replace existing books with ‘edited’ versions. Sounds very ‘Big Brother’ to me.

However, this points to a problem inherent in self-publishing. Where are the checks and balances? Amazon states that the eBooks

… were added to our catalog using our self-service platform by a third-party who did not have the rights to the books…

How does something like that happen in the first place, especially given the titles in question? Surely this should have raised some red flags for someone somewhere? If this had been a traditional publisher, there would have been more steps involved before it was published but even that is no guarantee.

When I was accepted for publication, I provided the publisher with the copyright certificate for my novel but it wasn’t a requirement. The main difference is that there is a relationship inherent in this arrangement so my certifying in the contract that I own the work free and clear is probably sufficient. This relationship doesn’t exist in the self-publishing world. Also the process of editing makes it difficult to obtain a copyright before the contract has been signed. This doesn’t hold true for self-publishing.

The rise of eBooks and blogs has made it easier than ever for people to make their voice heard. It has also made it easier than ever for other people to steal someone else’s work. Perhaps it’s time for companies in the business of self-publishing to reevaluate the requirement for copyright.

Way back on February 02, we announced that we would be a partner for Read an eBook Week. To commemorate the event we have partnered with Champagne Books to bring you two free eBooks for the week. Champagne is that one publisher that, no matter what book we buy from their store, we can expect it to be excellent. With the official announcement we didn’t tell you which books to expect. Today I am going to do just that!

Just a quick note before I move on: Champagne is currently running a sale. They have every eBook in their store on sale for 1/2 price from now until February 28th. At $3 a book you won’t want to miss this. If you enjoy a good read I do suggest you take advantage of it, I did!

5 Types of Readers we’re Expecting for Read an Ebook Week

Posted by Trevas On February - 11 - 2009

For those who haven’t heard yet, Read an eBook Week is coming. To commemorate this great event we have partnered with Champagne Books. For one week (March 08th to 14th) we will be providing two of Champagne’s books for free. It’s true. We managed to pull a partnership with one of the best e-Publishers on the web!

This one is going to be a lot of fun, and in case you missed the official announcement, we will also be running chats, having contests with prizes, and in general we plan to make this one a week to remember.

To maintain some semblance of control over the download we are running this one by sign-up only, so enter your email address below and then read on to learn about the five types of readers we are expecting to show up.

Since everyone loved my artwork so much last week, I’m at it again. Here are the top five types of readers who we expect to show up for the great books we have for Read an eBook Week. Which type of reader are you?

The Easy Reader doesn’t require fancy devices or new-fangled gizmos. They just download their free eBooks and read them on the PC. For these readers, quick and easy is how they prefer it!

The Sharing Reader brings a friend, and doesn’t mind when that friend peeks over their shoulder to have a read. The sharing readers is a kind-hearted type who enjoys the comradery of reading with a someone else.

The Comfortable Reader grabs their laptop and their lazy-boy. There’s nothing like finishing that hard day with a good book. Be careful not to fall asleep, you might drop the laptop!

The Distinguished Reader brings their Kindle. They also aren’t adverse to a glass of fine bubbly while they enjoy a good book. Notice our distinguished reader even took the time to grow an extra-classy mustache. This reader is all about class and likes to be seen holding his Kindle and reading around town.

The Active Reader tends to read their eBooks on the go. The Black Berry is usually the chosen reading device for this fine fellow. If you do fall into this category, be sure to bring a bandage or two.

Disclaimer - If you fall into the active reader category, we cannot be held responsible for that time you become completely engrossed, in the excellent books we sent you, and end up jogging into that solid metal post!

Giving Thanks to Those Who Have Helped Us Promote Read an eBook Week Thus Far

I’m a big believer in helping those who help others, and all of these great people took time out of their day to post about eBook Week and link back to our site. Be sure to check out all of these great sites:

If I missed anyone, please do send me an email. Although I’m usually on top of our site stats, there is so much traffic this past week I quite possibly could have missed a few. Please do help us promote this one, and you’ll be on the list for next week (send me an email at trevas @ ebookguru.org if you do).

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to sign up for this one. We have setup a temporary mailing list that will run from now until eBook week is over, which we will use to send you your download links.

Free eBooks – Fiction for Young Adults and Children

Posted by Trevas On February - 9 - 2009

This week it falls upon my shoulders to bring you the free ebook of the week post. With Read an Ebook Week coming we have our adult readers covered (sign-up for the free books here), so I thought it would be good to post up something for younger readers. Today I have an eBook for children, and an eBook for young adult/teen readers.

A Free eBook For Kids

I’m a big believer in reading with children. Reading helps a child’s imagination, helps them to grow in reading comprehension, and reading together with your child provides excellent time spent with your youngster.

For our youngest readers, I have a Classic eBook. It is illustrated, and I have converted it to formats to be read on your PC/Laptop or on your mobile reader. The book is At The Back of The North Wind by Elizabeth Lewis and George MacDonald. It was originally published in 1914.

Just to let everyone know, there are literally hundreds of books like this freely available from Project Gutenburg. But, if enough of our readers like this idea, I don’t mind taking 5 minutes to convert the files and post them once a week. Suggest an eBook by leaving a comment if there is a childrens classic you would like to see here.

For YA/Teen Readers

For young adult readers, I have something very special for the free eBook this week. The book is a Sci-Fi novel, and it’s been on bestseller lists all over the world. If you haven’t guessed yet, the book is Little Brother by Cory Doctorow.

Now I don’t know this author personally, but I do like his philosphy. He is the only author I have seen who releases his work under a Creative Commons License.

You can download the book in every imaginable format from Cory Doctorow’s site here. I also suggest that you take the time to watch the video on this page to learn a little more about this author and his own philosphy on licensing/downloads/sharing.

One note on this one – I’m also a big believer in not judging a book by it’s target market. You may want to grab a copy for yourself for a good read while you’re waiting for eBook Week!

Have a great week, and be sure to sign up for the free books we have coming after partnering with Champagne Books (the best e-Publisher on the web) to celebrate Read an Ebook Week.

Today we have a very special announcement to make. This one is something that you definitely won’t want to miss. It’s big. No it’s bigger than big. It’s huge, and anyone who misses out on this wonderful and unique opportunity really will be missing out.

You need to stop what you’re doing right now read this whole page, and then mark your calendar, because it’s coming!

Curious yet? Of course you are…

So here’s the deal. March 08th to 14th, is Read an eBook week. After receiving a partner request from the Read an eBook Week site, I knew this was one event we just had to be in on.

If we’re going to be on the partner list though, I figured we should make it big. Make it something that will keep our readers talking about it for the entire year. So I thought to myself, what can I do to make this one something to remember?

My first thought was offering free eBooks. Of course we give away eBooks all the time. So it had to be better than just another eBook. No, if free eBooks was the answer it had to be big. It had to be something you would enjoy reading, and it had to be bigger than just any old eBook…

After pondering the idea for a while, I asked myself: Who is the best e-Publisher I know?

The answer was simple, it’s Champagne Books.

They are the one e-publisher that I know of, that no matter what book I buy from their store, I won’t be able to put the book down until I’m done reading it. I’ve read 6 books from Champagne over the past couple months (3 of them have been reviewed on our site so far, 5 more reviews will be posted this month), and with each one the quality of the books was beyond excellent.

Here’s the part you’ve been waiting for:

To make this Read an eBook Week something you’ll remember forever, we’ve partnered with Champagne Books. For the entire week of March 08th to 14th, we will be offering not one, but two of their books to you for free! That’s right! We’re giving them away, and all you have to do is show up!

Read on to learn how how you can participate:

We have setup a temporary mailing list to both announce the books (I’m not telling you which ones we have yet) and to send out the download links on March 08th.

All it takes to participate in Read an eBook Week, and get to free eBooks from Champagne Books, is your name and email address. We’ll also be running some special events (to be announced), so you can expect cool contests/prizes, chats with some of the authors from Champagne, and more.

Free eBook(s) of the Week – 25,000 Classics Just for You

Posted by Amanda On January - 5 - 2009

You know when you visit an eReader site, or a new eBook site and they advertise 20,000 free eBooks? Have you ever wondered where they get all of those give-away books? Well, I am about to to give you all of those books, and you don’t need to buy a thing!

For this weeks free eBook, we are pointing our readers to project Gutenberg.

This is a project that was actually started in the 1970’s (before any of us had even heard of eBooks). The project was to digitize as many of the classic works as possible. As of today, there are more than 25,000 books in the Gutenberg library, and most of them are available in multiple eBook formats. Some are even available in audio!

The site allows you to search by author or title, so head on over to Project Gutenberg and search for you favorite classic. If you aren’t sure what you want to read, click on the BookShelf link and you’ll be able to browse by Genre.

Personally, I’m a big fan of Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickinson, and Agatha Christie. If you asked Trevas or Don, they would likely shout out loudly about Marion Zimmer Bradley, or Edgar Rice Burroughs. It really doesn’t matter what your reading tastes are, you’ll find some great eBooks in the GutenBerg Library.

We have many more free ebooks to come, so be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed to get the best free reading material.

Until Next Week,

Amanda

Free eBook of the Week – Cliff Burns – So Dark the Night

Posted by Trevas On December - 29 - 2008

For this week’s featured free ebook we are sharing a link to an authors sites. Cliff Burns is an author with a few books to his credit, a film in the works, and more than 100 short stories in print. I have read a few of his shorter works and I do enjoy his writing (I’m currently working my way through the novel we are about to share with you).

On his own blog, Cliff is giving away his novel So Dark the Night. Cliff descibes the book as:

So Dark the Night is a supernatural mystery, an homage to film noir, cult TV and pulp fiction. Imagine a weird hybrid of Raymond Chandler, the films of Val Lewton and “The X Files”.

You can get your copy of So Dark the Night from Cliff’s blog – Beautiful Desolation. The book is freely available in PDF format. From what I’ve read so far, the book is great; and since it’s the best deal your likely to find on an eBook this week – I do suggest you download your copy!

If you are like me and prefer to read eBooks on a mobile device, converting it for a reader is quite simple. Use the MobiCreator software to import the PDF file and then build it as an eBook. The created mobi file will be readable on all major eBook readers (including a Kindle).

Enter the video embed code here. Remember to change the size to 320 x 270 in the embed code.
