For anyone who hasn’t read this book yet, I highly recommend it. The Road by Cormac McCarthy would be considered a cross genre book. It takes elements of of a few genres (it set in a post-apocalyptic world), and intermingles them beautifully. I think I would class this book more in as general fiction, than anything else, since it really tells the story of man’s inner struggle. This book was featured in the Oprah book club a couple of years back and once you read it, you’ll definitely know why.
The Road tells the story of one man and his boy. It is filled with constant struggle, as they make their way across the post-apocolyptic USA. They go seeking a better life, and possibly a colony of other people. The book never really tells you how the apocalypse came, or why the general population is gone, and in this case it doesn’t matter. The best parts of the book are with the main characters own struggles. I’m not going to give away the entire storyline, but I am going to recommend this one to everyone.
If you’ve been looking for your next great eBook, I am giving this one a 10 out of 10, and I promise you won’t be able to put it down. Personally, this was one of those books that I didn’t stop reading until I was done. The kind that drew me in, and left me wanting more. At least this time it does give a satisfying ending.

I’ve read this one (obviously – it was recommended by Oprah) and in my opinion it is something no collection should be without.
I found this book addicting, too. You just had to keep going, even though it only promised more dreadful things.
I remember Cormac McCarthy fans having a mixed reaction to The Road winning the Pulitzer and the Oprah anointment. It was like when The Departed won Best Picture. “Yeah, it was good, but why didn’t they give Scorsese the Oscar for Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, even Casino?”
People were telling me that All the Pretty Horses and Blood Meridian are superior McCarthy novels. Those don’t have the genre mixing you liked but still might be worth a try.
Thank’s for stopping by Doug. I didn’t mind All the Pretty Horses, but I still liked The Road better. I’ve never read Blood Meridian, I might have to add it to my list of should-reads.
Cheers,
Trevas
